A golf handicap is a sports measurement disguised as a social convention. The problem it solves is real: two players of different ability cannot share a scoreboard unless the course itself is measured first. The World Handicap System answers with two numbers, course rating and slope, that turn a specific piece of ground into a comparable difficulty, and the handicap is the translation of a player’s history onto that ground.
What do course rating and slope actually measure?
Course rating is the expected score of a scratch player on that course under normal conditions; slope is how much harder the course gets for the higher-handicap player relative to the scratch. The pair is a two-point model of difficulty: where the good player’s score sits, and how steeply the course punishes the rest. That is a cleaner measurement than most field sports manage, because it was designed to make unequal competitors comparable on one board.
